Published on 31 October 2011

While cleaning the kitchen I came across some active yeast for making bread; to my surprise a pink ribbon and Susan G. Komen was slapped across the top of the package. I laughed out loud at the ridiculousness of pink products made for October. I present to you, on this last day of breast cancer awareness month, the top ten most ridiculous breast cancer/pink products.

Here we go…..

10)Conair Breast Cancer Awareness Infiniti You Curl Curling Iron – Pink

This item made the list because it is absolutely ridiculous to sell a curling iron to women under the ruse of supporting breast cancer.

9) AutoTex  Pink Windshield Wipers

This item goes along with the catchy slogan, “Wipe Out Breast Cancer”. Windshield wipers to support breast cancer is absolutely ridiculous, but we must say does support a good cause…National Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

8) Bake for the Cure

Yes folks, specially packaged Argo Cornstarch, Kingsford Cornstarch, Fleischmann’s Yeast, Karo Syrup, Mazola Cooking Oil and Spray, Spice Islands® Vanilla, Durkee ® Vanilla, Nutmeg, Cinnamon and Ginger will be sold in stores November 1, 2010- December 31, 2011. A combined donation of $250,000 will be given to Susan G. Komen. For more mundane details go to www.bakeforthecure.com Shall I even mention why this made the list?

7) Yoplait Pink Lids

Yoplait’s pink lid campaign makes the list because it is just plain stupid and stingy! Just buy the product, lick the lid clean, and a whopping 10 cents goes to Susan G. Komen. Gee, you would only need to lick 200 lids just to donate $20.  The fact that less than 40% of Susan G. Komen’s profits go to breast cancer research, ie the cure, that leaves you with 4 cents of every lid going to help cure breast cancer, oh let’s not forget the postage costs 44 cents. So maybe 2 cents total to breast cancer…Thanks Yoplait for being so generous!

6) Smith & Wesson Pink M & P JG 9

A 9mm pistol designed to benefit breast cancer. I am not sure how much is donated to Susan G. Komen for the sale of each of these guns, but this guy made the list because breast cancer & guns share a lot in common…they both kill women. A 2008 report from the Centers for Disease Control says firearms are the second most common cause of violent deaths in women. Too bad we can’t have six products in the top five!

The top five has been reserved for products that pledge money to breast cancer yet contain chemicals/ingredients linked to causing breast cancer

5) Campbell’s Pink Cans

Campbell's partnered with Kroger back in 2008 to produce a limited edition pink can for its chicken noodle and tomato soups. I’ll give it to Campbell’s as they did donate $325,000 to support breast cancer research, detection, and treatment. Sadly, studies have found high levels of BPA (Bisphenol-A) in canned foods. BPA has been linked to breast cancer…might want to can it when it comes to canned foods that are pink washed.

4) Pink Drinks

There are so many out there. Any alcoholic beverage that supports breast cancer is ironic as even moderate drinking is associated with developing breast cancer. I will give props to the beverage industry for at least donating money to a worthy cause. However, it is sort of like having pink marlboro packs (even big tobacco is smart enough to steer clear of lung cancer awareness campaigns).

3) Philosophy’s Jar of Hope

Oddly this jar of face cream doesn’t contain an ounce of hope, but it does contain methylparaben and propylparaben. These two yucky chemicals are thought to mimic estrogen and may be a cause of breast cancer. One study found parabens present in breast cancer tumors. Five dollars goes to Breast Cancer Research Foundation…but you pay a much higher price!

Our runner up is......

2) Avon’s Breast Cancer Crusade Nailwear Pro

This product lands at the number two spot because Avon supports a major breast cancer walk and uses breast cancer support to promote its brand and boost profits. The Environmental Working Group lists Avon as having nearly 150 products that are listed as a high hazard due to carcinogens, hormone disruptors, & neurotoxins that are present in the products.

Drum roll please…..this product is offensive to breast cancer survivors, gives almost nothing to support a cure for breast cancer, and is promoted by Susan G. Komen, an organization supposed to be dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer…should we go on?

The number 1 spot goes to….

1) Promise Me perfume

This perfume contains a number of supect chemicals not listed in its ingredient list according to a  private-third party analysis contracted by Breast Cancer Action. Two of the worst chemicals found are…galoxolide and toluene. A measly 3% of the $59 purchase price goes to Susan G. Komen. That’s about $1.51 per bottle sold. Lastly, perfume is offensive to many breast cancer survivors who are sensitive to smells following chemotherapy.

Remember to think before you pink….

Do the products being sold contain harmful ingredients/things known to cause breast cancer?

Where is the money being donated? Is it a reputable organization?

How much money is donated per product or is a general donation being made not based on number of products sold?
